WOLFBEAR
Institute leads
explorations of challenging topics and issues using
a novel experiential approach called Praxis
Engagement Method™ (PEM) that
encompasses a myriad of multi-sensory methodologies
including sociodrama, guided critical thinking, group
work, visual imagery, problem solving exercises,
music, sound, humor, games, and more.
Participants become engaged,
absorbed, and immersed in the learning and are able to
recall information taught at a higher rate than utilizing
traditional lecture methods.
Praxis
Engagement Method (PEM) is based in Frierian
theory and is framed within a dialogical model that views
learning as a process of shared experiences.
Praxis is
based upon reflection, critical thinking, analysis, and introspection,
with the product of the reflection becoming the action. Monologue,
narration, and lecture lead participants to memorization
without reflection and critical thought.
Friere describes this traditional
pedagogy as banking education. It is in the dialogue and
in the experience that learning flourishes for both the student
as well as the teacher. Edgar Dale’s research found
that as adults we tend to remember 10% of what we read and
only 20% of what we hear. When adults are engaged
in the experience, however they tend to recall 90% of that
experience.
When students are engaged
in experiential methodologies learning process is ignited.
This is the goal of
the Praxis Engagement Method.
By utilizing various multi-sensory
techniques of engagement, participants are first asked to
reflect on the issue and then are immersed in the action
of the experience.
